We hosted our first Keynote Address by Dr Máirín Glenn. Formerly a primary school teacher and school principal, Dr Máirín Glenn is now an independent advisor in the field of action research, on postgraduate teacher education programmes. She is a co-convener of the Network for Educational Action Research in Ireland (NEARI). Máirín is passionate about practitioner-based action research and she has co-authored five books on the topic including Action Research for the Classroom: A Guide to Values-Based Research in Practice (2023). Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions following the talk and learn more from Máirín extensive experience in the field. Dr Glenn will discuss the importance of education research for professional development as an educator.

PANEL DISCUSSION

We hosted a panel discussion involving four students/graduates representing different HEIs in Ireland, focusing on their different 'Perspectives on the Research Journey'. Participating in the panel are four conference presenters who represent a diverse group in terms of their unique research journeys. Given the different areas of research (including language, inclusion, education studies), the different methodologies used, and the different universities and programmes attended (UCC, UCD, St Angela’s Sligo and MIE), we had a varied and interesting discussion on the theme of"Perspectives on the Research Journey". This panel was led by Holly Smith who will ask participants about their engagement with the research process and tips they have for conducting research.

journal launch

The sixth volume of the STER e-journal was launched at the Conference. This volume presents eight articles prepared by education students of MIE, TCD, UCD, SETU, DCU and our first international article from the University of Graz. All articles are based on students’ undergraduate or postgraduate dissertation research (to Masters level) and have undergone a double-blind peer review process. Articles cover a diversity of themes including religious education, professional development, play therapy, diversity and inclusion, English language teaching and literacy education.

The STER conference is unique in that it is designed, led and delivered by education students for education students. The conference places the student voice at the heart of the research dissemination process. It is a pioneering initiative designed with the main goal of supporting education students to share their research with the wider education community. At the STER Conference 2021, we welcomed 22 presenters, 15 authors and over 175 attendees to our virtual campus and to the first ever virtual STER Conference. Working online was challenging for us all, but the STER team maximized on the opportunity of working remotely. We brought STER to our international colleagues in the university of Barcelona; and forged partnerships with national organisations and  encouraged students from across the country to present and attend this evening.

Reflection on Conference 2019

Where: Mary Immaculate College, Limerick
When: Tuesday 2nd April 2019

The second STER conference was a cross-campus, interdisciplinary event involving almost 50 student teachers and education graduates from across a wide variety of programmes. The conference was attended by students and staff from both the MIC Limerick and MIC Thurles campuses. The themes of the conference included social inclusion, leadership, well-being and work-based learning and their relevance to experiential practice of teaching is clearly evidenced. Opening the Conference, Prof Hourigan said “Each generation has new concerns, original insights and innovative research methods which they bring to their research. The publication and dissemination of the STER online journal not only raises the profile of student teacher research at national level but critically disseminates the findings of that research."

Reflection on Conference 2018

Where: Mary Immaculate College, Limerick
When: Tuesday 3 April 2018

The inaugural STER conference and journal were established by Dr Aimie Brennan to give student-teachers a platform to share their research in a collegial and supportive environment. This year, PME students in MIC were invited to participate. In keeping with the student-centred ethos of STER, articles were reviewed by a student peer review panel in a double-blind process, and a student organising committee was formed to assist with the running of the conference. The committee would like to thank the Institute for Educational and Social Policy Studies (PRISEM), who provided funding for the printing of student research posters.
